We have an immediate opportunity for an IT Architect II, Virtualization for our Managed Services division in Sacramento, CA.

FusionStorm, a leading national provider of IT solutions and Cloud/Managed services, is seeking an experienced senior IT Architect who wants be a part of a dynamic, fast growing team of professionals delivering leading-edge, hosted cloud computing solutions to customers. FusionStorm is leading, top-tier partner with VMware, Cisco, EMC and other leading industry vendors.

This position is for our Cloud/Managed Services group and reports directly to the Director of Engineering.

POSITION OVERVIEW: This position has responsibility for planning, design, architecture, implementation oversight, support, and technical ownership for FusionStorm Managed Services core infrastructure and customer solutions with a focus on advanced server virtualization and cloud computing. This includes design, implementation, maintenance process, and operational procedures.
Primarily, this role acts as a forward leaning technical architect to design and oversee solutions implementation for operational and production platform infrastructure. This may include systems, devices, applications and tools related to direct customer service delivery or supporting, monitoring and maintenance of the platform or ancillary management tools. Further the architect must function as a final stage escalation point for operational support engineers, and other architects. The ideal candidate will have the ability to research and report on technologies, generate white-papers, generate designs, advise internal and external customers on technical direction, and technical strategy. Build and validate equipment configurations, and be technically hands-on as needed in a complex multi-vendor, multi-technology environment.

The ideal candidate should have a passion for technology, be innovative, and experienced, and have an established background in defining and living with the consequences of architectural technology decisions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

Perform the following tasks:

  • Architect solutions for a complex multi-vendor environment, with a whole solution approach and analysis, including input from peer architects around systems in their sphere of expertise.
  • Coordinate and run POC*s, reference implementations, and R&D setups of various products and solutions.
  • Define maintenance and monitoring practices.
  • Write documentation and maintenance guides for infrastructure implementations.
  • Assist in developing training plans for mid-level engineers.
  • Research new products and technologies; stay current on latest technology trends and solutions.
  • Work collaboratively with the Managed Services Product Management team to bring new cloud computing solutions to market.
  • Act as a Tier-3/Tier-4 point of escalation for issues.
  • Provide mentoring and guidance for other engineering staff.
  • Establish and document forward leaning designs and roadmaps for infrastructure, software, process and procedures.
  • Define and maintain capacity management methodologies, and present capacity reports that account for both licensing, logical, physical, and performance capacities.
  • Develop and conduct ongoing training and documentation for operational engineers.

SUPERVISORY DUTIES:

  • Provide technical and operational guidance and leadership to other engineers during critical events, and environmental analysis.
  • Provide and contribute to technical and product strategy for the business unit.

ESSENTIAL EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

  • Preferred candidates will meet the following requirements:

Experience

  • Minimum 5+ years experience with data center IT infrastructure including architecture, design and operational responsibilities.
  • Minimum 3+ years design and operational experience with server and data center virtualization with a focus on VMware technologies (ESX, vSphere, and others)
  • Desired: Design and operational experience with multiple, cross-technology disciplines including storage systems, data center networking and security.
  • Experience operating in 24×7 environments.

Education

  • Desired: Bachelor*s Degree in Computer Science or Engineering, or equivalent
  • Demonstrated history of self-driven education.

Certification

  • VMware VCP (VMware Certified Professional) and/or VCDX (VMware Certified Design Expert)
  • Other industry certifications are a plus (EMC, Cisco, HP, etc.)

Note: Certifications and education may serve as a benchmark to verify knowledge but will not be a measure of demonstrated capability.

  • Hands on, demonstrable, experience with designs, equipment, and working with vendors from the following areas:

Servers / Systems

  • x86/x64 Servers: IBM, HP, Cisco, Sun, others
  • Operating Systems: Linux, Windows, Unix
  • Virtualization: VMware required; Microsoft HyperV, Citrix Xen and others is a plus
  • Applications: MS Exchange, MS SQL, MySQL, Oracle experience is a plus

Storage (preferred but not required)

  • Technologies: NAS, SAN, DAS, FCoE, iSCSI, NFS, CIFS
  • Vendors: EMC, NetApp, Cisco, Qlogic, Hitachi, Brocade, Isilon
  • Applications: NaviSphere, PowerPath, Fabric Manager

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

Combined with the above listed requirements, as well as a demonstrated ability through work and work related tasks, the preferred individual will also exhibit competencies with the following products or similar products:

  • Visio, Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint
